Tibet is open for foreign tourists from April 2023

Tibet is finally open for foreign tourists to travel from April 2023. After three years of restrictions owing to Covid 19, the mystic land is finally open for inbound tourism. The news has dragged the attention of thousands awaiting to visit the alpine desert at the roof of the world. The summer of 2023 is the best time to travel to Tibet avoiding the usual crowd. 

Opened in January for domestic tourism

Earlier in January, domestic tourism was promoted with the winter tour campaign. Entry into the historic Potala palace was made free for Chinese and Tibet tourists until March 15 before Tibet was open for foreigners. 

There is a huge difference between how Chinese, Tibetan and foreign tourists can travel to Tibet. China also restricts visas for journalists, Tietan in exile and civil societies. Foreign visitors are obliged to obtain permits in addition to Chinese visas before entering Tibet. 

Tibet Tour in Summer 2023

The summer months of June, July and August are the best time to visit Tibet. Since Tibet was only open in April, it will still take some time for people to plan a Tibet trip. Also the flight back from Lhasa to Kathmandu will be high for some time. The additional health and safety protocols are likely to make the visa and permit process more complex at the beginning. Tours will be slightly expensive as people will have to travel in small private groups. 
However, travelling while there are few tourists is an advantage of Tibet tours in 2023. 

How to get Tibet Travel permit in 2023 ?

To obtain a Tibet travel permit for your tour to Tibet from Nepal, we require a valid passport copy, a vaccination card, travel insurance, and a photograph. The process for obtaining a permit involves submitting an application to the Tibet Tourist Bureau in Lhasa, receiving a scanned copy of the travel permit by email, and then applying for a visa at the Chinese.
