Time Magazine has listed 'Burhan Camp' of Bardia national park in their list of 'The world's greatest places of 2024'. The magazine listed '100 extraordinary destination to explore' in 2024 based on themes such as other worldly art, active travel, learning more deeply about communities and area we are travelling to etc. on 25th July.
The Burhan Camp in Bardia, has been providing information to tourists about wildlife and local art culture in collaboration with the local community.
Bardiya National Park, an expansive 374-square-mile tropical haven located in the Tarai region, serves as a less frequented alternative to Chitwan National Park. Over the past decade, the population of Royal Bengal tigers in this park has surged to an unprecedented 125 individuals. Conservationist Manoj Gautam, the former director of the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal, has acquired a parcel of private land within the Khata Wildlife Corridor to prevent its development into a casino hotel, thereby setting a precedent for sustainable tourism practices. Strategically situated on a peninsula flanked by two channels of the Karnali River, Burhan Wilderness Camps provides guests with opportunities for bushwalks, canoe excursions, and wildlife tracking alongside anti-poaching units, all while observing Asiatic elephants, greater one-horned rhinos, swamp deer, and other wildlife without entering the park. Although sightings of tigers are not guaranteed, Gautam asserts that the likelihood of encountering one during a three-night stay is high, and guests may hear their roars echoing through the night.

According to Mohan Chaudhary, president of the Bardia Regional Hotel Association, the word 'burhan' in the Tharu language refers to a special place. "It could mean the inundation area.".
There are no permanent structures in the camp on the border of Thakurbaba and Madhuvan municipalities. According to Chaudhary, this is a 'tented camp'. When the guests came, the owner pitched a tent in the courtyard and provided residential services. It is almost closed now as it is monsoon season. Chaudhary said that it will be fully operational after the end of monsoon. "It has been conducted on non-cultivable land," he said, "it has played a role in the promotion of tourism in Bardiya." When tourists do not come, the management has rented a house in the village to store temporary structures including tents.
